About Us 

Public Works is made up of over 200 employees who provide service to our residents, businesses, and other City departments to improve and maintain the City's streets, sidewalks, landscaping, traffic, sewers, and water system.

 

Current Opportunities 

 

 WATER DIVISION

The Public Works Department's Division of Torrance Municipal Water (TMW) is a full service water agency with approximately 26,500 service connections that provides both retail and wholesale water service to approximately 80% of the City. Torrance Municipal Water is a leading water agency in the South Bay that prides itself on serving its customers in a cost-effective manner, with a reliable supply of high-quality water, essential to maintaining public health and safety, economic vitality, and community well-being.

WATER SYSTEM OPERATOR III (RE-ISSUE)

As a part of the Torrance Municipal Water Division, the Water System Operator III leads  crews and provides in-the-field technical expertise to entry and intermediate level Water System Operators. In this lead role, the Water System Operator III is responsible for planning work, ensuring safety, training crew members, troubleshooting, and responding to customer concerns in the field. The Water System Operator III also performs the most complex skilled work in the installation, maintenance and repair of the City's water system, and performs water quality control and meter repair. The most frequent jobs include preventative maintenance, corrective actions, and emergency repairs to water mains, hydrants, and replacing valves. Performs related duties as required.

 WATER SYSTEM OPERATOR II (RE-ISSUE)

Water System Operator II is a journey level position that performs a full range of complex skilled work in the installation, repair and replacement of the City's water system, including water mains, valves, water service lines, hydrants and/or meters; drives and operates heavy equipment, including a backhoe, boom truck, and dump truck to perform excavations and clean up at work sites; Investigates leaks ranging from meter leaks to large main leaks and determines the level of repairs needed; and may provide training and technical supervision to lower level Water System Operators.

WATER SERVICE INTERN (AT-WILL) (RE-ISSUE)

Water Service Interns receive on the job training to prepare for a career path as a water operator. The internship is designed to prepare trainees for an entry level position in the water field. Upon successful completion of a Water Technology Associate's program and the Water Service Internship, interns will have gained the knowledge and skills to obtain a Water Distribution (D1) certification.  Water Service Interns will work alongside crew members to assist and learn to perform several related tasks such as excavating, shoring, and backfilling trenches; supports supervisor with installing, replacing, repairing, inspecting and maintaining residential and commercial fire hydrant, water mains and water service lines.
