Sustainability Program

The City of Torrance has created an Interdepartmental Sustainability Team to further the City's Sustainability Goals and create a Sustainability Plan to guide the City's sustainable programs and policies.

The Team consists of representatives from departments or divisions working on sustainable initiatives, including: City Manager’s Department & Economic Development, Community Development Department (Planning, Building & Safety, Environmental/Code Enforcement), Public Works (Recycling, Water, Engineering), Community Services, General Services & Fleet, and Transit.

What is Sustainability?

Sustainability is a multidimensional concept. The most common definition is from the Bruntland Commission: “sustainable development is development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.”

The Team's Mission

The Torrance Sustainability Team is committed to the stewardship of the local environment to ensure the prosperity of future generations. The Team will work together to expand ongoing sustainable initiatives into a more effective movement towards a more Sustainable City.

The Team's Vision

The Sustainability Team envisions the growth of the City of Torrance as a prosperous community which recognizes and protects the value of its residents, environment, and economy. The Torrance Sustainability Plan shall be the framework for city staff, elected officials, and the public to guide and measure the city’s progress towards sustainable goals.

Programs, Policies and Projects

The Team worked together to create a comprehensive list of the City’s sustainable practices and projects in order to understand the role of each department in sustainability, the programs that are already underway, and areas that could be expanded upon or receive further focus going forward. This list, which can be found at the link below, will also be used during the drafting of the future Sustainability Plan and outreach efforts.
