The Torrance Police Department Forensic Identification Specialist (F.I.S.) Unit is comprised of Five (5) Forensic Professionals and a Supervisor. The all civilian unit, performs the full range of complex and technical crime scene investigations, evidence collection, documentation and preservation; forensic photography, latent print examinations, providing expert testimony and other related work as required. They play an integral part with the subsequent investigation processes, providing potential leads to the case investigator using scientific applications.

 

The laboratory underwent a major renovation in 2013 and boasts the latest technology equipment for chemical processes and digital imaging systems. The F.I.S. unit is also a beta site for the Automated Biometric/Fingerprint Identification Systems (ABIS/AFIS) and work closely with the Los Angeles County Regional Identification Systems Unit to provide feedback, workflow practices and real time testing for the Forensic Community in the County.
