Reserve Fire Inspector Program

 This exciting new program will assist students currently enrolled or having completed an accredited college or university with major coursework in fire technology, fire science or related fields. The opportunity will be given to apply acquired skills and gain insight, while preparing for a career as a Fire Inspector.

 Reserve Fire Inspectors will assist the Community Risk Reduction Division to initiate Fire Prevention assigned inspections and re-inspections. The program will also provide public assistance, gather new business information, assist with complaints, and provide administrative support while assisting with public education events, activities, and other duties provided to the community through the division.

 The volunteer/non paid internship program will provide meaningful on the job experience and will assist the candidate with developing valuable written and verbal communication skills, while working alongside professionals currently in the field.

 How do I qualify?

 To qualify, candidates must be:

  •  18 years of age with a high school diploma or GED
  • Currently enrolled or have completed courses in fire science/technology course work
  • Successful completion of Fire Prevention classes 1A and 1B
  • Valid California driver’s license
  • Ability to work independently
  • Ability to adhere to the uniform and grooming standards of the Torrance Fire Department
 What is the Schedule?

 Participants in the Reserve Inspector Program will be expected to commit to volunteer for one year of service in the program with an option of a second year by invitation. The schedule of the program is one 6-8 hour shift per week

 What are the Benefits of this Program?

When you successfully complete this training opportunity, participants will be better equipped to enter a career as a Fire Prevention Specialist/Officer.

The focus will be on basic to advanced understanding and exposure in conducting fire and life safety inspections of various occupancy types, experience in conducting construction and tenant improvement inspections, basic to advanced understanding and experience in the operation and inspections of various fire protection equipment and systems.  Ability to research, interpret and apply fire and life safety codes in a variety of inspection scenarios as well as familiarization to Hazardous Materials compliance and National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) compliance.

Selection Process

The selection process will consist of an application review, a written test, and interview, and successful completion of a background investigation.
