The Safer City Initiative is a cooperative partnership between Little Company of Mary Hospital, Torrance Unified School District, and Torrance Fire Department. A committee of representatives from each of these organizations gathered to brainstorm, organize, and implement a plan to make the City of Torrance the safest place to live, work, and shop from the perspective of cardiac care. A comprehensive review of the cardiac patient from onset of a heart problem through release from the local hospital was conducted. As a result of this review, the local hospital, school district, and fire department identified the following three areas of current concentration: 

• CPR Training
• Automatic External Defibrillators
• 12 Lead Electrocardiograms (EKGs)
