The Health and Safety Code, Section(s) 13113.7, 13113.8 or 18029.6 requires that smoke detectors be installed and maintained in all residential dwelling units, apartment houses, duplexes, lodging houses and mobile homes. The Health and Safety Code also requires that carbon monoxide detectors be installed and maintained in all single family and multi-family homes that contain a fossil fuel burning heater or appliance, fireplace, or an attached garage. Carbon monoxide detectors must be installed outside of sleeping areas and on every level of the dwelling including the basement.
Test your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors once a month, and change batteries or replace detector as needed.
Smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors are early warning devices. Depending on the type of fire, you may have only minutes or even seconds to reach safety. These detectors provide the advanced warning of the development of conditions that will become dangerous to life within a short period of time. It is required by law that the property owner maintain these life safety devices.
Only the spaces open to the public were inspected and the detectors were not evaluated.
It is the responsibility of the owner or agent for the owner, to assure dwelling unit(s) are equipped with properly installed and operational smoke/carbon monoxide detectors as required by section(s) 13113.7, 13113.8 or 18029.6 of the Health and Safety Code.”
