Goal: To prevent fire, loss of life, and property damage through code enforcement and regulatory measures.

The Torrance Fire Department provides for life safety, environmental protection, and property conservation through hazard reduction in our Fire Prevention and Hazardous Materials Administration programs.

The Torrance Fire Department's Fire Prevention program involves a vast array of services for the community ranging from answering simple fire safety questions from Torrance residents to more complex fire protection concerns from our business community. The staff in our Fire Prevention Division is a very well trained group of individuals who, as a team, work to ensure that new and existing fire protection systems within buildings are properly maintained. In addition, our staff of inspectors provide valuable guidance to businesses on how to stay "code compliant" and we are very sensitive to the concerns of the business community in trying keep costs down.

Fire Prevention Division staff also provide fire safety information and assistance to our City planners, commissioners and other City staff about new projects in the City; review new construction plans for fire protection regulations conformity and emergency access;.and investigate fires that occur within the City to determine their cause and origin.

The Torrance Fire Department conducts new business and annual fire prevention inspections of all businesses, schools, hospitals, convalescent homes, day cares, apartment complexes, industrial facilities and high rises. We also conduct fire prevention inspections of special events, such as displays in common areas the mall or fund raising fairs and carnivals at your local school. Inspectors look for obvious and sometimes not so obvious discrepancies in the maintenance of the fire safety provisions for the building or the special event, such as keeping exits clear or providing the proper type of fire extinguisher.

Fire permits for certain activities, practices or operations that have been determined by the Fire Code to warrant closer scrutiny to ensure safety and compliance with the Codes are issued by our Fire Prevention Division. Some of these activities are:

  • Public displays at the mall
  • Carnivals and Fairs
  • Use and Storage of Flammable liquids
  • Operation of a Public Assembly
  • Open flames in Public areas
  • Installation or removal of Underground Fuel Tanks and Above ground Fuel Tanks
  • Tents where the public is invited
  • Use or Storage of Hazardous Materials
