2007 Students And Government

2007

The City of Torrance proudly hosted the first Students and Government Day in 2007. This program was launched to encourage youth participation in community affairs. Selected students participated in a day-long event on Tuesday, May 1, 2007.

Twenty-two students were chosen based on their 100-150 word essay submission on the topic: "If you could be Mayor of Torrance, what would you like to accomplish to help the City?" Applicants were required to submit an essay with a proposal that they would like to develop that would improve the quality of life in the Torrance community. The selected students engaged in various activities including shadowing the mayor, council members and executive staff in their jobs. They later acted in the roles they shadowed at a City Council meeting, which was the culmination of the day. During the meeting, they conducted some official business for the City.
