Bona-fide Torrance-based, non-profit groups may submit events to be included in the Torrance citywide calendar pending approval. The City of Torrance Citywide Calendar System Administrator (Office of Cable and Community Relations) is responsible for determining which events are appropriate for posting and then approving a calendar entry. The administrator also has the capability to submit the event to other calendars so that your event may be posted on more than one calendar if appropriate. Events must occur within Torrance city limits to be considered for inclusion and submitted within the categories already identified within the calendar. Find out How To Submit.

How L.A. Invented the Backyard Barbecue

  • Date: 06/20/2022 6:00 PM

From the days of the Spanish ranchos well into the 20th century, for Angelenos a barbecue was a gathering of hundreds or thousands of people to eat whole shoulders and rounds of beef, even bulls' heads, that had been cooked overnight in a sealed underground pit.

Backyard grilling developed fitfully in the 1920s, from a context that involved horses and movie stars, but by 1940 it was triumphant. To join author and food scholar Charles Perry for a lecture on this culinary tradition, please email SBuehler@TorranceCA.Gov by June 17, 2022.
