For 33 years, Heal the Bay has coordinated 30-70 cleanup sites across Los Angeles County as part of California Coastal Cleanup Day. In 2022, we experienced a significant return of our participation numbers with over 4,500 volunteers coming out to 39 coastal, underwater, kayak, and inland sites. Heal the Bay is aiming to have around 55 sites and hoping to have over 7,000 volunteers!

SAVE THE DATE: Coastal Cleanup Day at Torrance Beach

This year’s annual Coastal Cleanup event is on Saturday, September 21st at Torrance Beach. We are currently planning the logistics to make this event as successful or even more than prior events, as the California Coastal Commission marks this year the 40th Anniversary of this popular, highly attended event!

Annual Coastal Cleanup Day 2023 Re-Cap:

  • Los Angeles County Numbers (Heal the Bay Sites)
  • 47 Cleanup Sites Reported
  • 7, 337 volunteers
  • 1, 646 volunteers who brought their own cleanup supplies
  • 16,211 pounds of trash
  • 429 pounds of recycling
  • 97.5 miles of beach, river, underwater, and neighborhoods sites cleaned.
  • 15 Inland Cleanups, 31 Coastal Cleanups, 2 Dive Cleanups

Torrance Beach was recognized by Heal the Bay as the most populous site in 2023 with 650 volunteers (2nd highest was Santa Monica State beach with 429 volunteers).

Coastal Clean Up Day is the largest volunteer day on the planet, which is coordinated with the Ocean Conservancy, California Coastal Commission, L.A. Department of Beaches and Harbors and Heal the Bay, and we thank them for their continued support and guidance in helping us making this event a huge success every year. Torrance recognizes that by cleaning up the beaches, the community is participating in this global effort to keep our oceans healthy, to keep our water source healthy, and to keep our community healthy. Partnering with the Torrance Area Chamber of Commerce, and Heal The Bay, Team Torrance will be back on the beach participating for a record 27th year! This year's event will take place on Saturday, September 21st, 2024, from 9 A.M. to 12 P.M. at Miramar Park in Torrance.

Volunteers will have the opportunity to apply Leadership, organizational and communication skills, as well as work directly with team members, City staff, elected officials, the Torrance Chamber of Commerce, and the Torrance Community. Local businesses, key club groups, schools, teams, and more are encouraged to get involved in the biggest cleanup of the year! Students can also earn up to three hours community service credit.

“Torrance Beach is a zero-waste site. Volunteers are encouraged to bring their own gloves, bags, and reusable water bottles.”
